Elden Ring Guide – Caelid – Dungeons, Points of Interest, and Secrets

One of the most important regions in Elden Ring is called Caelid. On this page, you will find an overview of the region, which details the primary dungeons, bosses, loot, and secrets that can be discovered in this area.

Caelid is the region to the east of Limgrave, and it is notorious for its desolate, rot-filled landscape, red skies, and terrible swamp. Caelid is located directly east of Limgrave. It is one of two regions that together make up the greater Caelid region. The other region, which is located to the north and is called Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow, is even more dangerous than its counterpart in the south.

Redmane Castle, which is located in the far southeast of Caelid, is home to the region’s very own Legacy Dungeon; however, it is considerably less expansive than the other main dungeons. However, in addition to these main dungeons, there are a large number of smaller ones, as well as side quests and bosses that roam the world. It is also home to a large swamp known as the Swamp of Aeonia, which is infested with Scarlet Rot. It features a ravine that is both narrow and deep, and it separates much of Dragonbarrow and Caelid from one another. Additionally, it is where the town of Sellia, which is known for its sorcery, can be found.

Caelid Map Stele Locations

You will need to find two Map Fragments in order to uncover the specifics and topography of the entire Caelid region. These Map Fragments can be found at the Steles that are located in Caelid proper and in Dragonbarrow.

The fragment of the Caelid Map can be found in plain sight along the main highway of Caelid, which makes a large half-circle around the Swamp of Aeonia. The stele can be found close to the fork in the road where another path heads further southeast towards Redmane Castle, not far from a Nomadic Merchant. However, the path that leads there is fraught with peril, including an old and rotting dragon as well as a member of the Night’s Cavalry who watches over the area at night.

Caelid Legacy Dungeon

Redmane Castle, also known as Caelid’s Legacy Dungeon, is the third and final major dungeon that you will come across on your own while adventuring in Elden Ring. It is a much smaller experience when compared to previous legacy dungeons such as Stormveil Castle. However, the path leading up to the entrance of the castle is well guarded with siege weaponry, and it is also the site of a festival for warriors that is about to begin. Even though General Starscourge Radahn, the demigod who rules the castle, is not physically present in the castle itself, the only way to get to him and communicate with him is to travel through.

In order to get into the dungeon, you will need to travel across a massive greatbridge to the island on which the castle is situated, dodging the catapults and ballistas along the way. However, the main entrance will be closed. To gain access to the interior of the castle, you will need to navigate your way around the outer walls to the south and then along the cliffs until you find a back entrance.

When you are ready, check out our walkthrough of Redmane Castle to learn how to vanquish the hordes of foes that reside there and uncover every hidden passageway.

Caelid Merchants and NPCs

As you travel throughout the land of Caelid, you’ll run into a number of people who are friendly, or at least appear to be friendly, and you’ll have the opportunity to talk to them, as well as buy and sell with them to acquire rare items.

Nomadic Merchant (North Caelid Highway) – This Nomadic Merchant can be found west of the Swamp of Aeonia, right next to the Astray Caelid Highway North Site of Grace. Additionally located to the east of his position is the Aeonia Swamp Shore Site of Grace.

Gowry is a former great sage who can be found inside of Gowry’s Shack. Gowry’s goal is to help Millicent recover from the illness that was caused by the Scarlet Rot. In addition to that, he offers a selection of different sorceries for sale, and he will also offer to sell you a unique incantation after you have provided Milicent with the Valkyrie’s Prosthesis and reported back to him. However, he will vanish after you have reached a certain point in the Millicent Questline.

You can gain access to his wares by retrieving his Bell Bearing from the spot where he formerly stood and presenting it to the Twin Maiden Husks.

Millicent is a young woman who is afflicted with an incurable disease called Scarlet Rot. Millicent is discovered for the first time inside the Church of the Plague, writhing in agony next to the statue. Gowry will relocate to the Altus Plateau once you have cured her of the Scarlet Rot and earned her favour by curing her of the disease. For further information, please refer to our Millicent Questline.

The second Nomadic Merchant in Caelid can be found on the South Caelid Highway, at the fork road that divides the highway in two directions: one leads to Redmane Castle, and the other leads to Sellia, the Town of Sorcery. He is particularly known for selling copies of the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook 15.

Castellan Jerren is a non-playable character (NPC) that you will first encounter inside of Redmane Castle. While he is there to take part in the celebration that is being held for General Radahn, you have the ability to call upon him for assistance in the conflict with the demigod. In the Sorceress Sellen Questline, Jerren is another important NPC to speak with. After Radahn has been vanquished, you will be able to have one final conversation with Jerren in order to “put an end” to the festival and restock the castle with foes.

Caelid Points of Interest

Caelid is home to a large number of intriguing locales, enemy camps, and other points of interest, all of which can be found while adventuring through the region. Each location has something that is interesting enough to warrant exploration, despite the variety of foes and treasures that can be found there.

If you click on a location of interest, you will be taken to a section further down the page that provides a more in-depth explanation of that location, including the foes you will face and the secrets you can find.

Smoldering Church

The Smoldering Church can be found off to the left side of the primary road that runs between Limgrave and Caelid. Get ready for a fight, because as soon as you enter the church, NPC Invader Anastasia, the Tarnished-Eater, will attack you and take over the church. Her Curved Greatswords can be deceptively quick, despite the fact that she is relatively simple to bring down. After being vanquished, she will leave behind a Furcalling Finger Remedy as well as a Sacred Scorpion Charm.

Before continuing onward, you should visit the Site of Grace inside the church and loot the Missionary’s Cookbook 3 and the Nomadic Warrior Cookbook 14 from the two corpses that are located to the right of the church.

Shack of the Rotting

As you travel further into Caelid from the Smoldering Church, you will eventually come across these dilapidated shacks that are infested with Putrid Corpses and Slimes. Although there is nothing of significant value to loot here, you can find Preserving Boluses inside the main shack. These are an antidote to the accumulation of Scarlet Rot. Just be wary of the Putrid Corpse that is hiding around the corner, waiting to pounce on you.

Along the cliffs that look down on the ruins below is another location known as the Site of Grace.

Ruined Camp

This deserted camp can be found at the base of the hill, just beyond the point where the main road branches off from the Shack of the Rotting. This once-thriving camp has been overrun by Giant Scavenger Dogs and Giant Crows, but there are still some excellent items to be found here.

We strongly advise avoiding the camp entirely and instead making your way to the Caelem Ruins Site of Grace, which is located a short distance further along the road. By activating this Site of Grace, you will have an easier time either dealing with one foe at a time or sneaking up behind them to safely loot the items. Both of these options will be available to you after you activate this Site of Grace.

Stealthily approach the abandoned carriage that is located next to the two Giant Scavenger Dogs, and open the chest to retrieve the Greatsword that is inside. The heart of the camp is where you’ll find a chest with a Rune Arc inside of it, as well as a body with six Explosive Bolts on it. You will have to get rid of the Giant Crow in the middle of the fight; as long as you keep the fight contained, the dogs will not get involved.

As long as you approach from behind the Teardrop Scarab that is in the lead, it will continue to roll away from the camp. You need to slay it in order to obtain the Whirl, O Flame! incantation.

Caelem Ruins

Caelem Ruins can be found along the Caelid Highway, just a short distance to the south of the Ruined Camp. If you are travelling on the main road, it is impossible to miss the ruins because the highway goes right through the middle of them. The neighbourhood is teeming with Exploding Corpses and Flame Chariots, and there are plenty of both. Make every effort to put some distance between yourself and these two foes, as the first of them is going to detonate and kill themselves. Regarding the Flame Chariots, engage them while you are mounted on Torrent, and aim for the soldier who is controlling the chariots from behind.

An entrance to a room containing the boss can be found in the eastern portion of the ruins. You will find a pair of Mad Pumpkin Heads inside this package. You will gain access to a treasure room that contains the Visage Shield if you are successful in defeating them.

Forsaken Ruins

The Forsaken Ruins are identical to the ruins that can be seen when standing in front of the Shack of the Rotting. From the Caelem Ruins, head in a westward direction, away from the motorway. Be wary of the Giant Crow pair that is poised to launch an assault from the tops of the nearby dead trees. You’ll find an Imp Statue in this area; in order to clear the mist from the cellar’s entrance, you’ll need to use a Stonesword Key on it. Within the subterranean room that houses the Sword of St. Trina, there is a treasure chest that you can open.

Fort Gael

This enormous fort can be reached by travelling to the west of the Smoldering Wall Site of Grace or by travelling to the south of the Forsaken Ruins and arriving at the Fort Gael North Site of Grace. Both routes lead to the same destination.

You won’t need to get too close to see that the primary entrance to Fort Gael is heavily defended by Radahn Soldiers and Radahn Knights. As soon as you get within a short distance of the path that leads into the fort, a Radahn Knight will begin firing gravity arrows at you. To obtain his Greatbow, you must sidestep everyone else and kill him.

You should go to the main gate of the fort and go around the corner to where a Radahn Soldier is guarding a ladder. You should then kill him and climb the ladder. You’ll find a Lion Guardian and a Radahn Soldier down below; however, you shouldn’t engage them until the loot and enemies that are higher up have been cleared out.

You should head in the direction of the watchtower and eliminate the two Radahn Soldiers and one Radahn Knight that are located inside. There will be a canopy that has been destroyed and a treasure chest on the right side of it; plunder the chest to obtain the Starscourge Heirloom. You will be transported to a location close to the front door of Redmane Castle if you use the Waygate that is located atop the watchtower. There are still more things to get, so you shouldn’t worry about this just yet.

Find your way back to the wooden stairs, clean up the section of the upper balconies located in the southwest corner, and pull the lever to open the gate.

Take advantage of the elevated platform that is close to the left of the ladder and from which you can jump down if you are using a bow, sorcery, or incantation. You won’t need to worry about the Lion Guardian attacking you if you kill it from this vantage point. You can access a room that has a chest with the Katar fist weapon inside of it by going through an archway that is located here.

There is no way to defeat the Lion Guardian other than to get in close and personal with your weapon. When the Lion Guardian is defeated, it will drop the Ash of War: Lion’s Claw. Because of this, it is in your best interest to kill it. Once you have retrieved the Rune Arc from the dead body that is located next to the gate, Fort Gael will be finished. You are free to leave through the main entrance whenever you like if you decide to go on an excursion into the surrounding area. In that case, you can make your way to Redmane Castle through the Waygate.

Caelid Waypoint Ruins

The Caelid Waypoint Ruins can be found a short distance to the southeast of Fort Gael. These ruins are infested with Kindreds of Rot and Rotten Strays. The section in the northwest of these ruins contains the entrance to the underground chamber that can be found here. The room is packed with stone coffins, each of which is watched over by a large number of Kindreds of Rot. Clearing them out will allow you to safely loot the katana made of meteoric ore from the room in the back.

Cathedral of Dragon Communion

Following the directions provided by the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace will lead you to the Cathedral of Dragon Communion. This location is located to the southeast of the Caelid Waypoint Ruins.

The Church of Dragon Communion, which can be found on the island in West Limgrave, is an architectural model for this cathedral. In spite of the fact that there are no NPCs in this location, it is possible to carry out the Ritual of Dragon Communion by sacrificing Dragon Hearts in order to obtain a number of different dragon-related incantations.

Defeating the various dragons that serve as bosses is required in order to acquire certain of the incantations listed below.

Swamp of Aeonia

This Caelid region’s sub-region is located smack dab in the geographic centre of the area and can be reached on horseback from virtually any direction.

This area gives you access to three different Sites of Grace that you can interact with.

The first of these is referred to as the Aeonia Swamp Shore Site of Grace, and it can be found on the western edge of the swamp.
The second location is the Heart of the Swamp Site of Grace, which can be accessed after defeating Commander O’Neil, the boss of the pitch.
The final one can be found just to the north of the same boss fight, which is referred to as Inner Aeonia.
You will find green tracks leading away from the Aeonia Swamp Shore Site of Grace in the direction of the invisible Teardrop Scarab. It must be slain in order to acquire the Ash of War: Poisonous Mist. Another Teardrop Scarab can be found just to the south of the boss fight against Commander O’Neil. This particular Scarab, when killed, will drop the Ash of War: Sacred Ring of Light.

You’ll come across the Street of Sage Ruins not far after leaving the western edge of the swamp and heading in a northerly direction. If you want to avoid getting infected with the Scarlet Rot, you should try to clear this area of enemies while you are mounted on a horse. The Traveler’s Set can be looted from a dead body that is located inside the ruined structures.

Proceed to the north-northwest direction and eliminate the Servants of Rot that are guarding the entrance to the underground cellar. Then, open the chest to obtain the Rock Sling sorcery spell. Last but not least, salvage the Meteorite Staff from the dead body that is dangling from a window close to the staircase. After that, travel to the most northeastern part of the swamp and salvage the Poison Armament incantation from another Teardrop Scarab.

Sellia, Town of Sorcery

This once-great town that was known for its mastery of a variety of different sorcery arts is now just another victim of the constantly expanding Scarlet Rot. There is a huge variety of loot to be found in this location, from Ashes of War to one-of-a-kind weapons and armour. Additionally, the only way to reach Dragonbarrow from Caelid is via the aforementioned town.

Spectral representations of Noble Sorcerers, Glintstone Sorcerers, and Twinsage Sorcerers can be found living in Sellia at this time. These guys have the same statistics as their regular counterparts; the only difference is that when you get too close to them, they disappear. You can and should use Torrent in conjunction with any Spirit Summon ability of your choosing to quickly and easily clear an area of enemies and loot.

In the course of your exploration of the town, you will come across these blue magical barriers that are blocking something behind them. It will be necessary for you to ignite the three braziers that are perched atop the various buildings in the town in order to get rid of them.

The very northern edge of the town is home to the very first brazier in the settlement. You can find the Golden Seed by travelling all the way north from the main entrance and climbing the large staircases that are located there. You will need to climb up the ladder and then drop down onto the large branch on the right in order to light the first brazier. Take the Staff of Loss that is lying on the dead body that is on the building that is next to the first brazier. Below that dead body is a room with just enough space for a treasure chest, and inside of it is the +1 Spelldrake Talisman.

By climbing up the branch that is next to the staircase, you will be able to reach the second brazier. You should make your way to the Marionette Soldier on the roof using Torrent; the second brazier should be on your left as you make your way there. You can get there by first climbing up the branch in front of you, then jumping to the massive branch behind it, and finally climbing the ladder that is there.

The third brazier is the one that is situated in the most immediate proximity to the principal gate of the town. Descend the ladder of the second brazier, then make your way back to the large branch by jumping there. You will need to make one more jump to reach the ladder of the third brazier once you are on the roof to the left. There is also a Stonesword Key that can be obtained from a dead body that is located nearby and is suspended from a ledge that connects two buildings. The structure that is adjacent to the third brazier is home to a Teardrop Scarab, which can be found perched atop the massive branch that is located near the building’s roof. Its drop is an Ash of War: Double Slash.

Return to the primary entrance of the dungeon once you have disabled all of the magical barriers so that you can retrieve the significant loot one at a time. Activate the Redmane Painting that is located to the right of the road that runs through the centre of the town if you haven’t already.

Continue moving forward until you reach the intersection; in a small room there is a chest containing the Night Comet spell. After going around the corner to the northeast, you will find a small treasure chest that was previously blocked off. In this chest, you will find the key to the Imbued Stonesword. On the roof of the same structure is a dead body that is holding the Cerulean Tear Scarab helmet. This body can be looted as well.

After you have collected all of the items that are available here, you should travel to the west of the town and visit the Sellia Under-Stair Site of Grace if you haven’t done so already. Just to the left of the location of the Golden Seed is where you will engage in a boss fight.

Nox Swordstress & Nox Priest

The fight against the Nox Swordstress and the Nox Priest is a dual-boss encounter, but other than that, there is not much more to say about it. While the Nox Priest provides support from a distance using spells, the Nox Swordstress fights using a sword that can also be used as a flail. This gives her the ability to attack from close range all the way out to medium range.

They are both extremely vulnerable to guard breaks, as it is possible to essentially stop their combos with any attack regardless of the weapon that you are using against them. This fight against the boss can be simplified by using any form of Spirit Summoning. When they are defeated, they leave behind the Nox Flowing Sword. You can retrieve the Lusat’s Glinstone Staff from the chest located inside the building, which is located further into the boss room.

Return to the spot where you obtained the Golden Seed and enter the area through the back entrance that was previously blocked off. Before continuing on to Dragonbarrow, you should visit the Site of Grace in the Sellia Backstreets.

Church of the Plague

Continue travelling in an upward direction along the road after leaving the Sellia Backstreets Site of Grace until you reach the church at the southernmost point. You’ll find Millicent writhing in agony on the ground as a result of an illness caused by the Scarlet Rot. Gowry, who can be found in Gowry’s Shack just outside of Sellia, Town of Sorcery, is connected to the Millicent Questline in some way. Aside from the Sacred Tear that can be found in front of the statue, there is no significant loot to be found here.

Sellia Upper Gateway and Swamp Lookout Tower

By travelling southward from the Church of the Plague, you will be able to gain access to the higher levels of Sellia Gateway. In addition to its primary function, the gateway performs the function of a bridge that leads to the plateau on which the Swamp Lookout Tower is situated. Be careful when approaching the tower because it is guarded by a Bloodhound Knight. In addition to that, the sorcery of Eternal Darkness is contained here.

Road to Redmane Castle

The Nomadic Merchant is the starting point for the Road to Redmane Castle, which is located at the intersection of the Caelid Highway South. You could reach Sellia, the Town of Sorcery, and Redmane Castle in the south by going in the direction of the east.

You can find the Windy Crystal Tear just to the southeast of the Nomadic Merchant in a pit that is surrounded by some rocks. Collect the Golden Seed that is located on the miniature Erdtree before making your way back to the main road by travelling south. Continue travelling in the same direction on the main road until you reach the Site of Grace at the Impassable Bridge.

The Ash of War: Cragblade can be obtained from a scarab in the sword monument, and the Arrow’s Sting Talisman can be obtained from a chest inside the tower next to the Site of Grace. Both of these items are highly desirable and can be found close to the Site of Grace. Be cautious of the few Redmane Soldiers that are located inside the tower, as they have the ability to knock you off the platform if you are not paying attention.

Caelid Scarab Locations

As you make your way through this area, you might come across a few scarabs dashing off in different directions. Some of them will refill your flask of tears, but others can reward you with unique items, including the following:

Ruined Campsite Scarab

  • Reward: Whirl, O Flame Spell

This scarab can be found not too far into the Caelid region along the main road near the site of a caravan that has been pillaged by a pack of large scavenger dogs and a flock of crows. The scarab can be found on the road just outside the camp; however, you should be careful that you are not ambushed.

Forsaken Ruins Scarab

  • Reward: Somber Smithing Stone 4

A large ruin that is guarded by enormous crows can be found on the western side of Caelid, close to the entrance to the region. A scarab is concealed to the south of where you are, but you can find it if you look on the opposite side of a large root that is suspended off the ground slightly. First you need to kill it, then you can defeat it.

Fort Gael Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Flame of the Redmanes

This scarab is normally invisible, so it can’t be seen, but it leaves a long trail as it travels around the path that leads to the fortified outpost of Gael, which is located on the western edge of the region. Look for the trail to the north of the entrance to the fort that is guarded.

Caelid Highway North Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Lifesteal Fist

You can find this scarab out on the road not too far from a site of grace if you are travelling along the main road through Caelid path the smouldering wall. You can also find a nomadic merchant there.

Sellia Crystal Tunnel Scarab

  • Reward: Poison Armament Spell

The entrance to the Sellia Crytal Tunnel can be found in the middle of Caelid, on the north side of the Swamp of Aeonia. Some players are transported to this location early on in the game. You can see a trail of light winding in and out of the poison muck just outside the mine on the edge of the scarlet rot swamp. It is in your best interest to simply wait by the shore, watch the trail, and then stand in its way and attack as it gets closer.

Swamp of Aeonia Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Poisonous Mist

Another scarab is hiding in Aeonia’s poison swamps, which are located on the southwestern part of the continent. Because of its annoying tendency to teleport around, you might find that the only way to quickly kill it is to either sprint at it while using torrent or snipe it from a distance.

Heart of Aeonia Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Sacred Ring of Light

A third scarab can be found lurking in the Swamp of Aeonia, which is located in the middle of Caelid. This particular scarab waits in the area behind the heart of Aeonia, which is where the world boss, Commander O’Neil, is located. A narrow passage behind the arena can be found just to the east, and it is populated with large flying bugs and the scarab (which will explode after being killed).

Sellia Town Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Double Slash

The enchanted town of Sellia is located to the northeast of the Swamp of Aeonia and is teeming with people who use magic. You can find a scarab that is hiding among the raised roots if you climb onto the rooftops with Torrent and look around. There are many roots that weave up and around the town and its buildings.

Caelid Catacombs Scarab

  • Reward: Somber Smithing Stone 4

The entrance to the dungeon is located along the southwestern coast of Caelid, close to Redmane Castle in the southern part of Caelid. Along the path that leads to the entrance of the Caelid Catacombs, you will find a scarab; however, you should be wary of the enormous crow that is hiding nearby and waiting to ambush you.

Redmane Castle Swordgrave Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Cragblade

Redmane Castle can be found in the far southeast corner of the map, and a low rise with a series of swords and a marker can be found just before the great bridge that cannot be crossed. There is a scarab hiding within this sword grave.

Redmane Castle Back Door Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Flaming Strike

This scarab can be found in a small cemetery behind Redmane Castle that is full of vampire bats. This is the location that you need to go to in order to use a ladder to get inside the castle, even though it is technically considered to be located outside the legacy dungeon.
