Elden Ring Guide – North Liurnia – Dungeons, Points of Interest, and Secrets

One of the three regions that together make up the expansive region of Liurnia of the Lakes in Elden Ring, North Liurnia is one of those areas. On this page, you will find an overview of the region, which details the primary dungeons, bosses, loot, and secrets that can be discovered in this area.

North Liurnia is the large central area of the Liurnia Region. It is comprised of much of the flooded lake that has swallowed up many ruins, turning the land into a bog filled with nightmares, and even flooding the small academy gate town – with the enormous Academy of Raya Lucaria towering large above the entire lake in the centre. North Liurnia is the largest part of the Liurnia Region.

This region is home to a great many mysteries as well as a wide variety of creatures that roam the bog. There are also many points of interest that are just barely standing in the flooded waters, and it also contains the sizable second Legacy Dungeon in the Elden Ring area.

North Liurnia Map Fragment Location

It is necessary for you to acquire three Map Fragments from the Steles that are situated in East Liurnia, North Liurnia, and West Liurnia in order to uncover the specifics and topography of the entire Liurnia region.

Find the North Liurnia Map Fragment at the southern entrance to the Academy Gate town along the flooded main road leading into the town before you enter the ruins proper. This location is just before you enter the ruins proper.

Liurnia Legacy Dungeon

Liurnia’s Legacy This dungeon, which you will come across naturally in Elden Ring, is known as the Academy of Raya Lucaria, and it is the second of its kind to appear in the game. Its size is comparable to that of Stormveil Castle, and it looms over the entirety of the Liurnia region from its elevated foundation, which is situated above the gate town and the flooded regions that lie below. Rennala, also known as the Queen of the Full Moon, is a sharbearer who resides there. Although she is not a demigod, she is the ruler of this location.

You won’t have it as easy getting into the dungeon as you did Stormveil Castle because the main bridge entrance that’s beyond the gate town is protected by magical wards. Fortunately, a dead body near the entrance is holding a map that details how to get to the location of the Academy Glintstone Key, which is guarded by a terrifying dragon to the west of the actual academy. If you are successful in acquiring this key, you will be able to use a seal to teleport directly from the seal to the entrance of the academy. From there, you will be able to use another seal to teleport across the crumbling bridge and onto the Bellum Highway.

Before infiltrating the school of glintstone sorcerers and their constructs, it is strongly recommended that you first investigate the rest of Liurnia, gain experience, and collect Smithing Stones in order to improve your weapons. This recommendation is similar to the one that was made regarding Stormveil Castle.

When you are ready, check out our walkthrough for the Academy of Raya Lucaria to learn how to vanquish the foes that are contained within as well as locate every last item and secret that is contained within.

North Liurnia World Bosses and Invasions

The region of North Liurnia is home to a number of world bosses that can be encountered outside of dungeons. Some of these bosses are free-roaming and can be found in specific zones, while others are hidden and won’t appear until you get close enough to them. In addition to this, there are multiple pre-written invasions carried out by NPC humans that will engage you in combat. Simply selecting a Boss to investigate further will reveal more information on how they can be defeated.

North Liurnia Minor Dungeons

You can find information about all of the available minor dungeons in North Liurnia, as well as the respective dungeon bosses and the unique reward you earn for completing each of those dungeons, in this section. The only mini dungeon in North Liurnia can be found tucked away at the foot of the Academy of Raya Lucaria on the west side, just beyond an Imp Seal Gate. To read the walkthrough for navigating the dungeon and discovering all of its secrets, select a dungeon from the list below and click on it.

North Liurnia Merchants and NPCs

As you travel throughout the land of Liurnia, you’ll run into a number of people who are friendly, or at least appear to be friendly, and you’ll have the opportunity to talk to them, as well as buy and sell with them to obtain one-of-a-kind items.

White-Mask Varre has reappeared and can be found standing directly in front of Rose Church, which is located to the southwest of Academy Gate Town. Once you have defeated Godrick the Grafted, then you will be able to speak with him at this location. He will test your allegiance to the Two Fingers, and if you choose to express your scepticism regarding them, you will be able to side with Varre (at least for the time being), and you will be able to proceed with his questline. You can learn more about how to complete the White-Faced Varre Questline by consulting our walkthrough of the quest.

Patches will leave Murkwater Cave and set up his shop next to the Site of Grace on Scenic Isle if he is forgiven for his transgressions. The assortment of products that he sells won’t change at all. After you have cleared Raya Lucaria and moved on to Caelid or the Altus Plateau, he will leave at some point in time…

When approaching the central flooded road from the south, you will come across a woman who has a peculiar appearance and will be pleading for your assistance in a small stone shrine that is located next to the Bird’s Eye Telescope. She believes that a Blackguard who lives nearby stole her necklace and wants it returned; the manner in which you retrieve it is up to you. If you are able to assist her, she will express her gratitude by agreeing to meet you on the Altus Plateau once you have ascended to the next region via the Grand Lift of Dectus.

Blackguard Big Boggart is a minor non-playable character who initially appears as part of the Rya Questline. He is a man who has an unhealthy preoccupation with seafood, particularly prawns and crabs. If you don’t kill him for his mask and fist weapons, completing the questline will allow him to become a merchant. But only if you don’t kill him. If a friendship with Boggart is established, it can be used later as a summon in the battle against Magma Wyrm Makar, and it will move onto the Altus Plateau after that.

After speaking to Diallos in the Roundtable Hold, you can find him in the Academy Gate Town. There, he is grieving over the death of his servant, Lanya, who was killed by other Tarnished. Conversation with him here will advance the storyline of his quest, which will require you to speak with him again in the Volcano Manor. To find out more, have a look at our walkthrough of the Diallos Questline.

Isolated Merchant – After entering the Academy of Raya Lucaria through the Main Gate, you can actually run south past the teleporting seal along the disused bridge walkway to find an isolated merchant who sells quite a few unique items if you follow the path past the teleporting seal. This merchant can be found among the overgrown path.

Bloody Finger Hunter Yura – After being attacked by Nejirus in West Limgrave, you can continue the storyline of Yura’s quest by looking for a red summon sign along the bridge that is located east of the entrance to the Academy of Raya Lucaria. This can be found past the seal. You will have the opportunity to assist Yura during his assault on a Bloody Finger Assassin and aid him in his victory over this adversary. For your assistance, you will be rewarded with a Rune Arc and the Ash of War – Raptor of the Mists. After being transported back to your world, you can engage in conversation with him in the area to receive an additional reward in the form of a Smithing Stone 5 and find out more about his mission to vanquish the Bloody Fingers and Eleonora, his most formidable adversary.

North Liurnia Points of Interest

You can find many interesting locations, enemy camps, and other points of interest in North Liurnia while travelling around the region. These are all things that you can learn about during your travels. Each location has something that is interesting enough to warrant exploration, despite the variety of foes and treasures that can be found there.

If you click on a location of interest, you will be taken to a section further down the page that provides a more in-depth explanation of that location, including the foes you will face and the secrets you can find.

Scenic Isle

A Site of Grace can be found on the teeny-tiny island to the north-northwest of the Laskyar Ruins. It will point you in the direction of Academy Gate Town. In addition, there are two non-playable characters that can be found in this area. Rya can be found just to the east of the island next to the Birdseye Telescope, and Patches can be found here if he is forgiven by his boss in Limgrave.

Academy Gate Town

The sunken ruins of Academy Gate Town are all that are left of the original town that served as housing for the academy’s sorcerers. The region is teeming with Albinaurics, Miranda Flowers, and Giant Crabs, each of which can be found in abundant numbers. The Site of Grace for this region can also be found right next to the Stelle on the North Liurnia Map.

You’ll also find Diallos here; he’s lamenting the death of his servant, Lanya, while he’s perched on the roof of a building that’s been submerged. You can find the fourth volume of the Glinstone Craftsman’s Cookbook tucked away in a chest atop a tower to the west of his location. As you continue to the west, you will soon come across a Golden Seed close to some ruins.

Rose Church

Located to the southwest of the southern entrance to the academy are the crumbling remains of a church that has been taken over by the Scarlet Rot and has Bloodroses growing all over it. White-Mask Varre will be waiting for you outside, and he will encourage you to join his order and serve the Bloody Lord.

If you get too close to the church’s centre, an assassin will emerge from the ground and attack you. You can find this enemy inside the church. This church is also an excellent location for gathering Bloodrose, which can be used in the crafting process. You’ll find a Scarab guarding the Bloodflame Blade Incantation on a small island to the northwest of the church. This island is where you can take it.

Boilprawn Shack

You won’t be able to talk to Blackguard Big Boggart outside of the Rya Questline, and his home is the Boilprawn Shack. Boggart is an important NPC for that storyline, and you won’t be able to interact with him outside of that storyline.

On the western side of the building, next to Big Boggart, there is another location known as the Site of Grace.

South Raya Lucaria Gate

The only part of the former Academy Town that is not submerged is the South Raya Lucaria Gate. A Monk Chariot that occasionally drops a Smithing Stone 3 can also be found in this area, along with a large number of Raya Lucarian Guards.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to eliminate all of the foes, but after you’ve done so, you should head past them and into the Site of Grace that’s just outside the magic barrier. Only then should you begin looting the area around you. If you go below the gate (under the academy), then turn to the north, you will find a Stonesword Key sitting on top of a dead body that is seated in a chair.

Temple Quarter

Another set of ruins can be found a short distance away from the Rose Church; these ones belonged to a temple in its previous life. The Temple Quarter is an excellent location for farming Bloodrose as it is now home to Albnaurics and Miranda Flowers.

You’ll find the Icerind Hatchet, a Dexterity-based axe, in the chest that’s perched atop one of the towers if you loot it. It is important to visit the nearby Temple Quarter Site of Grace before taking on Glinstone Dragon Smarag because this is the checkpoint that is the closest to it.

Testus’s Rise

Similar to Oridys’s Rise in the Weeping Peninsula (South Limgrave), a magic barrier also blocks this lookout tower in the northern part of the lake. In the beginning, this will be the case; however, in order to unlock the barrier, you will need to locate “three wise beasts” somewhere on the island.

These beasts are like those in Oridys’s Rise, represented by spectral tortoises.

The first tortoise is southwest of the magic barrier, next to a Phantom Undead.
Another tortoise can be found to the south of the tower. There is a slanted stone block resting on the land on the same level as the tower. Look down below those cliffs, and the tortoise is in the corner.
The final tortoise is the one that players have a chance of missing. It’s high up on one of the tree trunks to the right of the tower. If you don’t have a bow or use sorcery/incantation, you could use Torrent to double jump from one of the nearby rocks and hit the tortoise with your melee weapon.
Kill all the tortoises (and take out any spectral skeletons hounding you), and you’ll be allowed access into the tower, where you’ll find a Memory Stone as your reward.

Walking Mausoleum

One of the Walking Mausoleums that can be found in Liurnia can be found in the waters below the East Raya Lucaria Gate Site of Grace, which is located to the east of the broken bridge. The skull deposits that are typically located on the mausoleum’s legs can be found closer to the mausoleum’s entrance than in other mausoleums.

You can use the nearby Spiritspring Jump and wait for it to get closer to the Mausoleum in order to reach the top of the structure while it is still walking. You will need to time your double jump perfectly; otherwise, you will not be able to land in the small space that is available to you. Once you’ve arrived at that location, you only need to strike a few of those deposits, and the Mausoleum should crumble to the ground.

North Liurnia Scarab Locations

As you make your way through this area, you might come across a few scarabs dashing off in different directions. Some of them will refill your flask of tears, while others can reward you with unique items, including the following:

Rose Church Scarab

  • Reward: Bloodflame Blade Spell

White-Mask Varre can be found within a large ruined Rose Church that is located on the south-western side of the lakes, directly below the Academy of Raya Lucaria. In the water on the north side of the church, you should look for a scarab that is just hanging out there.

Temple Quarter Hill Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Thops’ Barrier

A scarab sits atop the summit of a small island hill in the middle of Liurnia Lake, which is located to the north-northwest of the ruins of the Temple Quarter. Because it is able to and will teleport around the island as you get closer, you will need to either charge it or snipe it from a distance in order to defeat it.

Raya Lucaria Gate Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Charge Forth

This tricky scarab is hiding in a place that you wouldn’t expect to find it: on the underside of a small bridge on the west side of the South Raya Lucaria Gate just past the ruined gate town. Below is where you will find a withered maiden, and there is a large crab that will be patrolling the area nearby. You can use a bow or a spell, or you could even use a throwing knife, to take it out from under the bridge.

East Gate Bridge Trestle Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Shield Bash

This Scarab can be found next to a site of grace and directly underneath the large broken bridge that leads from the Raya Lucaria Highway to the Bellum Highway. Look in the space in between the pillars of the bridge for the scarab that has been concealed there.

Academy of Raya Lucaria Scarab

  • Reward: Ash of War – Spectral Lance

The legacy dungeon known as the Academy of Raya Lucaria is where you can find this scarab. In the beginning of the game, you will have to travel through a large graveyard area. When you finally reach the exit, you will be able to continue past it on the left to find a path that loops back down to find a scarab.

North Liurnia Secrets

As was to be expected, there are a large number of mysteries for you to solve throughout the Elden Ring region. These mysteries range from imp statue doors to teleporters, mimics, and items that are hidden away. In this location, you will discover all of the secrets that have been discovered thus far in the West Limgrave region.

Crayfish Mimic

When adventuring through Liurnia, you are likely to come across a number of the dangerous Giant Crayfish. However, one of these creatures hides more secrets than it lets on. A solitary crayfish that patrols can be found to the southeast of the Rose Church, just in front of a group of three other crayfish. As soon as it is defeated, it will disintegrate into a cloud of smoke and reveal its true identity as a Grafted Scion. This is the same foe that you battled at the beginning of the game. If you are able to defeat this dreadful adversary, you will be rewarded with a Larval Tear, which can be used to respec your character once you have completed the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

The Stone Shrine Secrets

There are a number of different small enclosed stone shrines that resemble gazebos scattered all over North Liurnia. Many of these shrines contain a miniature statue of a woman. At each of these shrines, you can discover something of interest, including a significant number of Smithing Stones:

In close proximity to the Bird’s-Eye Telescope on Rya, west of the Highway Lookout Tower, you’ll find three Smithing Stones of level 2 (which are guarded by a large number of Land Squirts).
Three Smithing Stones can be found to the west of the Boilprawn Shack (Guarded by 3 Giant Crayfish)
Three times the Smithing Stone can be found west of the Gate Town Bridge (Guarded by 2 Giant Crayfish)
South of Rose Church is where you’ll find the Folly on the Lake, and Grace’s site can be found to the east of Minor Erdtree (Guarded by 2 Giant Octopus)
The Western Crystalline Woods contain three copies of the Smithing Stone 3. (Guarded by 2 Mounted Revenants)
Three times the Smithing Stone can be found south of Testu’s Rise (Guarded by 3 Giant Crayfish)
The Sending Gate to West Liurnia Map Stele is located east of Gate Town North. The three Smithing Stones are located west of the Eastern Liurnia Lakeshore (Guarded by Blighted Bloom Flower)
