White-Faced Varre in Limgrave
White-Faced Varre is one of the very first NPCs you’ll encounter when you begin your journey across the Lands Between in Elden Ring. At The First Step Site of Grace, White-Faced Varre will be there in his white mask, telling you to head to Stormveil Castle.
White-Faced Varre in Liurnia of the Lakes
If you return to The First Step Site of Grace after reaching Liurnia of the Lakes, you will find that White-Faced Varre has vanished and a figure representing him has taken his place. You can find him at the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes, which is located due west of the Fallen Ruins at the Lake Site of Grace.
Speak to him and he’ll ask you what you think of the Two Fingers. You can either say that you trust them or that you are unsure about them.
If you say you trust them, the conversation will end here. You can speak to him again and change your mind, however, saying you’re unsure about them. This will progress White-Faced Varre’s questline.
He will gift you with 5 Bloody Festing Fingers and tell you to use them. You’ll need to use them three times before you can return to Varre, and he’ll have more to say.
Using the Bloody Festering Fingers
To progress Varre’s questline, you will need to perform at least three invasions. You can do this by either opting to play online and use a Bloody Festering Finger to invade other players (note that you do not have to defeat them; if you’re having a rough go of it, simply invading and then jumping off a cliff counts towards your goal).
As of patch 1.06, you also now have the option to invade an NPC called Magnus the Beast Claw, whose sign may be found at the Writheblood Ruins, just north of the Mirage Rise on the Altus Plateau. If you choose the NPC route, you only need to defeat this one to progress the quest (versus three player characters) (versus three player characters).
Speaking to White-Faced Varre After Using the Fingers
You should go back to Varre and talk to him. During the conversation, he’ll give you two options: to be anointed or to refuse. Should you decide to have yourself anointed, he will bestow upon you the Favor of the Lord of Blood. Your final test for him will consist of saturating the cloth with the blood of a maiden. If you refuse, you will have the option again to choose anointment, as it is the only way to progress his quest.
Varre will tell you that in normal circumstances, you are required to kill your own maiden and recount the teachings of the Two Fingers. However, because you do not have a maiden, he will tell you that you can kill any maiden instead.
Acquiring the Maiden’s Blood
At this point, there are several ways to acquire Maiden’s Blood. Which of these is more convenient to access is dependent on which parts of the map you have unlocked, as well as how far along you’ve progressed certain NPC’s questlines.
At the Chapel of Anticipation
You can acquire Maiden blood by going back to the Chapel of Anticipation, the place where you began your journey in Elden Ring. To get here, you’ll need to use one of the teleporters at The Four Belfries. The third Imp Statue Seal unlocks the teleporter to The Chapel of Anticipation. You’ll need an Imbued Sword Key, which you can find the location of on our Stonesword Keys Locations page.
Kill the Grafted Scion here and you’ll unlock all of the Chapel of Anticipation. You’ll want to head over to the rope bridge to the chapel, and you’ll find the Maiden here that you will have encountered when you began the game. Approach her and select the option to soak the cloth in her blood.
Killing Irina in Limgrave
If you have not yet progressed Irina’s questline, head to the Weeping Peninsula, just past the Bridge of Sacrifice, to find her seated near the road. Kill her to reveal the option to soak the cloth in her blood. You should be aware that doing this will prevent you from completing Edgar’s quest, despite the fact that he will still attack you at the Revenger’s Shack regardless of what you do.
At the Church of Inhibition
The Church of Inhibition, located in northern Liurnia, presents you with a third opportunity to acquire Maiden’s Blood. The invading non-player character known as Festering Finger Vyke can be found a short distance to the north of the Frenzied Flame Village. Head into the church, activate the Site of Grace, then look just to the left of it to see the dead Maiden.
Once you have collected Maiden’s Blood using one of these methods, return to Varre at the Rose Church. During the course of the conversation, you are going to be requested to offer one of your fingers. Doing so gives you the Bloody Finger item. If you talk to him once more, he’ll give you a medal called the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. You now have the ability to speak with Luminary Mohg thanks to this.
In Mohgwyn’s Palace
At this point in the game, you have the option of using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal to travel to Mohgwyn’s Palace. Your goal should be to reach the Mausoleum Dynasty Midpoint Site of Grace after navigating your way through these ruins. Activate it and rest at it to reveal a red summon sign on the ground. Choosing to activate this will allow Varre to invade your world. As this is the only way to end his quest, take him on in battle.
After you have vanquished him, you should reload the area and go back to the spot where the invasion sign was to find him lying on the ground, injured. Speak to him here and exhaust his dialogue until he expires, at which point he will drop the Festering Bloody Fingers and Varre’s Bouquet items to put an end to his quest.
